It blew my mind that [photographer Shoichi] Aoki’s subjects were just going about their day with shopping bags, umbrellas, and snacks all somehow aligning with their outfits,” they add. With Aoki asking each of the people he snapped their current obsessions, an idea began to take root in Allen’s mind. “I wanted to create three characters, each with their own addiction, photographed to look like they’d been stopped in the street and asked about their looks.” The models in question are Simonetta Bucciarati, who describes their style as ‘fruit salad’ and is obsessed with covering their face with tiny fruit stickers, Sabrina Map, who’s a cult leader fixated on affirmations, and Jeanne Nicole Ni Ainle, who describes their style as ‘touristy’ and accessorises their look with a collection of tat picked up on their travels, puffing away on a vape while posing for pics with an outstretched selfie stick in hand. The shoot speaks to FRUiTS perennial influence and ability to inspire a new generation of fashion fans across the globe – something it’s likely to do more of, since the collection is set to be rereleased in the English language in the coming months.
