A sneak peek at Ewan McGregor as American fashion icon Halston

A Ryan Murphy-produced series on the designer’s life and career will premiere on Netflix next month

Netflix has shared a first look at Ewan McGregor as the influential American fashion designer Halston, in its upcoming limited series based on his tumultuous career and hedonistic lifestyle in the 1970s and 80s.

First announced in 2019, the show — simply titled Halston — will largely revolve around the designer’s fight for the rights to his own name, following a rise to fame that included designing hats for Jackie Kennedy, working with Andy Warhol, and dressing countless celebrities in and around Studio 54.

As detailed in a plot description, Halston: “leverages his single, invented name into a worldwide fashion empire that’s synonymous with luxury, sex, status, and fame, literally defining the era he lives in, 1970s and ’80s New York — until a hostile takeover forces him to battle for control of his most precious asset… the name Halston itself.”

Directed by Daniel Minahan (the filmmaker behind several episodes of American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace), Halston is executive produced by the Trainspotting star, alongside the prolific American Horror Story producer Ryan Murphy and his frequent collaborator Ian Brennan.

The cast also includes Krysta Rodriguez as the Studio 54 regular Liza Minnelli, Rory Culkin as the late filmmaker Joel Schumacher, David Pittu as fashion illustrator Joe Eula, and Rebecca Dayan as the jewellery designer and model Elsa Peretti.

Halston will begin streaming on Netflix May 14. View the new teaser images below, and read more about the rise and fall of the iconic designer here.
