At first the collaboration seems like an unlikely one; prolific and isolated zine maker Owen Plummer who has curated and ouputted many a comic/zine exhibition and is mainly known for his work at Lucky's Comics in Vancouver, being called up by Luella Bartley whose subversive British youth infused collections always get girls wanting more. However, Bartley saw a shared sense of humour in both Plummer and her label that has resulted in a collaboration of original drawings by Plummer on tees, bags, brooches and an in-store exhibition that will be on display throughout London Fashion Week at the Luella store on Brook Street. We caught up with Bartley to talk to her about seeking out Plummer.

Dazed Digital: How did the collaboration come about?
Luella Bartley: It basically came about because someone bought in this amazing fanzine into the studio and we were all so amazed by his work. It was like nothing I'd ever seen, so mental looking. Everyone was so desperate to do something with him as he just works away on his own. He's very much one of those artists that just sits draws and draws in one room. So we thought we'd just ring him up and see what we could do together!

DD: How did he react to getting called up like that?
Luella Bartley: He didn't know who we were as he's quite isolated but more and more he got excited. At first we just wanted to buy one of his designs for a t-shirt but then he got really into and so we decided that it's such a graphic, brilliant looking artwork that it would be great to do something more and bring it to life and make it 3-D. He did original designs for the t-shirts. Then we decided to do a whole shop concept to go with it.

DD: What is it about Plummer's work that you like?
Luella Bartley: It's just the madness of it all. It's just totally insane. I love that his work juxtaposes against the clothes in the shop. It just brings to life everything we love about his artwork. He just fits with our personality and has got our sense of humour.

DD: Are you quite open to collaborations of this sort?
Luella Bartley: I just get really excited by different artists. Recently we went to the Chelsea graduate art show and we're on the look out for new people to work with and we have a few exciting things come up!
