Calling all Margiela stans: 100 rare archive pieces are about to go on sale

Tokyo vintage institution LAILA launches its new website with an in-store exhibition and online sale, with iconic pieces from the legendary Maison’s 30 year history up for grabs

If you missed out on seeing the incredible Margiela exhibition which took place at the Palais Galleria in Paris last year, or you’re questioning whether you can actually physically wait for Reiner Holzemer’s long-anticipated revelatory documentary, if you happen to be in Tokyo this weekend we have good news: a new exhibition is offering the opportunity to get up close and personal with 100 rare, archival pieces from the legendary Maison’s vaults.

Taking place at wildly brilliant vintage boutique LAILA – a space which is fast becoming not just a store, but a cultural destination in itself if you’ve even a passing interest in the likes of Raf Simons, Rick Owens, Helmut Lang, or basically any member of the Antwerp Six – the intimate show heralds the launch of its new website, where each of the pieces will also go on sale from Saturday. Meaning even if you’re not in Japan you might just be able to get your hands on a piece of fashion history.

Among the pieces going on show (and online) are six items from the legendary oversized SS00 and AW00 collections, an inside-out, deconstructed wool coat, a pair of white, paint-splattered Tabi boots, plus many more that were actually on show as part of Margiela / Galleria 1989-2009 in Paris. The pinnacle of the exhibition, though, is an ultra-rare, super early piece released by Margiela in 1989: “A tattoo top, which is a very precious piece I searched for 15 years,” explains LAILA and indie publishing house printings.jp founder Hideo Hashiura. So, you know – no big deal or anything.

The exhibition launches in-store and online on July 21 at LAILA Tokyo.
