Hong Kong-born photographer and Dazed100er Joyce Ng is is known for her playful, surreal narratives, brought to life though the practice of observing the strangers around her. In 2019, an exhibition of her and fellow Dazed 100 creative Hanna Moon's work opened at Somerset House. Entitled English as a Second Language, the show was a landmark moment which placed two upcoming Asian photographers front and centre, and in the process interrogated the place of Asian narratives in the fashion industry – an area still largely governed by Eurocentric ideals of beauty.

In the summer 2019 issue of Dazed, Ng was tasked with reinterpeting the new Burberry monogram, which made its debut for SS19 – and was itself reimagined by Riccardo Tisci and Peter Saville after the former took over as chief creative officer of the historic British house. Inspired by the visual language of ritual and ceremony, the editorial was street cast by Ng and styled by Makram Bitar, and shot against the backdrop of an empty community function hall. With her lens trained firmly on the motif, the resulting images re-contextualise its place in culture in 2019.
