This month, the label is replacing its iconic reptile with ten limited-edition designs that place one threatened species on the front of their classic polo shirts – giving them the spotlight they deserve. For each design, Lacoste will produce one polo shirt per animal left in the wild – totalling 3,520 items for 3,520 threatened specimens – showing the alarmingly low numbers of animals nearing extinction. Did you know there are only 150 Yemeni mouse-tailed bats left in the wild? Or that only 589 Iberian lynx remain in existence? If not, now you do, and Lacoste's London and Paris stores will be shining a spotlight on these shocking facts. Other cities participating in the initiative include Tokyo, Miami, and Berlin, which each highlight another species in trouble. Having forged a partnership with International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) over the course of the last three years, all profits from the sales of these new limited-edition pieces will go towards helping the organisation’s ongoing conservation efforts. The collection will be released online and in stores on International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22.
