Barbie is winning a fashion award

Life in plastic, it’s fantastic

Since she first hit shelves 60 years ago, Barbie has been reimagined as a firefighter, doctor, even a McDonald’s cashier. Now, the doll can add award winner to her lengthy CV.

That’s right, an inanimate object will take home the CFDA’s Board of Directors’ Tribute – previously won by the likes of Michelle Obama. “Barbie has had such a wide influence on American fashion and culture,” says Steven Kolb, President and CEO of the CFDA. “Her story personally resonated with so many CFDA members that the Board of Directors decided to honour her with the special tribute.”

Over the years, Moschino, Alexander Wang, and The Blonds have all paid homage to Barbie’s stick-thin legacy. Model Adwoa Aboah has also been created in doll form as part of the Mattel family.

Barbie will collect her award (unlikely in person, though watch this space) on June 3 at the CFDA Awards.
