Sophia the robot sat front row at Alexander Wang

‘Ok, let’s go to the runway’

Alexander Wang’s AW19 show in New York last night was the designer’s second to sidestep the regular NYFW schedule, following his SS19 runway back in June. Like the earlier of the two shows – which traced the designer’s Chinese-American roots – last night’s questioned how he fits into his American identity. He describes it as a “celebration of the American hustle,” as reported by Vogue. “We’re taking stereotypes of class and wealth and trying to remix them, giving status symbols a new sensibility.”

The off-schedule staging of the show and the class-questioning collection weren’t the only talking points at Wang’s AW19 catwalk, though; one of the guests, in particular, drew some buzz. Sophia, the humanoid robot developed by Hong Kong-based company Hanson Robotics, sat front row at the show.

This “special guest”, as described on the label’s Instagram, is pictured hanging out with 21 Savage and Teyana Taylor.

Dazed 100 model Adesuwa also got to spend some time with the impressive (if a little creepy) Sophia at the show, posting a video to Instagram where they interact. In the video, the robot shows off some of her 50+ facial expressions before signing off: “Ok, let’s go to the runway.”
