Back in June, a bunch of LCF menswear students decided to go it alone when it came to their graduate show. The result was Burn The Man: an energetic (and slightly chaotic) guerilla presentation that showcased the Class of 2018’s final collections – among which was a stand-out offering from Mauro Piterri and Thomas Harvey’s collaborative label MAROMAS. Made up of flamboyantly-cut dress coats, sheer, skin-tight tops, and logo-emblazoned pieces, MAROMAS’ collection drew influence from the designers’ Argentinian and Caribbean heritage, and explored black masculinity and sexuality.
Now, the pair are set to show their work as part of an immersive fashion presentation at London’s ICA this weekend, as the institution hosts one-day event The Unfashioned Museum. Co-curated by Harvey, and in collaboration with GUAP magazine and LCF, a host of young, creative, queer POC will address identity, sexuality, and inclusion in fashion through a series of talks, workshops, and spoken word and music performances. Names on the line-up include Jenna Hartmann of trans-positive fashion label Baal, plus-size fashion blogger Stephanie Yeboah, and members of the team behind Hackney Carnival’s first QTIPOC stage, Faggamuffin Bloc Party.
“It’s a really important event, because it shows queer people, especially queer POC, that there are institutional spaces that exist, other than online, that are here celebrating what we represent in ways that are accessible for everyone – through fashion, discussion, and art,” explains Harvey. “We’re really excited because not only is our brand presenting under the designer spotlight, but because of the message we’re able to deliver with the platform given to us. For a long time the idea of what black masculinity should look like seemed irrevocable, but, alongside other emerging brands, we aim to change that.”
