Balenciaga enlists legendary photographer Catherine Opie for photo series

Starring 90s icon Jenny Shimizu

If you’re not following Balenciaga on Instagram, you definitely should be. A never-ending hole of eclectic and seriously likeable images, the brand enlists creatives all over the world to interpret its collections in-between its shows. The latest person to join this is fine art photographer Catherine Opie

Starring in the images are musician Shannon Funchess, and models Caroline Schechtner and Jenny Shimizu. The latter has been previously shot by Opie for a series in 2009, but initially found fame the 90s, walking for the likes of Calvin Klein, Prada, and Jean Paul Gaultier as an openly gay model.

Styled by Lotta Volkova, the trio appear in Balenciaga’s Autumn 2018 collection, posing on chairs that are often integral in Opie’s work. Known for her iconic portraits, over the years Opie has taken images of the S&M scene in San Francisco, teenage footballers, bikers, and self-portraits of herself breastfeeding.

While the collaboration between Opie and the Parisian house was only for Instagram, we hope there’s an Opie-shot campaign in the works.
