Having lensed big names such as David Bowie, Leonardo DiCaprio and Sophia Loren, Newton is perhaps most well-known as the so-called “king of kink”. The German-Australian’s photographs of empowered nude women were renowned as hyper-sexualised and often the subject of controversy. But during an expansive career launched in the 50s, his often voyeuristic and fetishistic photos were published by the likes of Vogue, Elle, Nova, Queen and Playboy. Describing the parallels between photographer and cosmetics brand, the Helmut Newton Estate’s worldwide agent Tiggy Maconochie explained, “he liked to push the boundaries of what is acceptable while remaining chic and dynamic. Like Helmut Newton, M∙A∙C pushes boundaries in beauty, gender and beyond. Both are simultaneously modern and classic as well as empowering.” Titled ‘M∙A∙C Limited Edition Photographs by Helmut Newton’ this collection features eye shadow, mascara, lip gloss and nail varnish. “I have always greatly admired Helmut Newton’s work – the precision and glamour of his images, as well as the strength and elegance of the women that he photographed,” James Gager, senior vice president/creative director, M·A·C Cosmetics. It is an honour to be able to create a makeup collection that captures his provocative vision in a M·A·C way.” By no means its first collection of this nature, M·A·C has a long history of teaming up with acclaimed photographers, artists, musicians and other culture-defining figures. Previous collborators include Cindy Sherman, Iris Apfel and Proenza Schouler, along with entertainers Lorde, Miley Cyrus and Tinashe. Head to the gallery above to see the campaign.
