“I’m a strong independent woman – my walk is destructive,” “I’m unfiltered, I just say it how it is,” “I’ve been in Vogue, that’s the fashion bible.” These are just some of the quotes from the just-dropped and very sassy first trailer for Strut – a new reality TV show about the first exclusively transgender modelling agency, Slay Model Management. 

Strut, which will be aired on Oxygen from September 20th, is being produced by none other than Whoopi Goldberg who emphasises the show’s relevance to the here and now. “This show is important right now because for all of the positive advances the community has made and continues to make, transgender is still a hot-button word that gets people hysterical,” she told Variety back in May.

“People tend to focus on the stereotype instead of the person, and this series will give viewers a unique opportunity to spend time with real people who are struggling with the same challenges we all face as we make our way through the world. You may even be surprised to discover that you have been seeing and interacting with transgender men and women in ways you didn’t even realise!”

While there’s still a long way to go in terms of trans representation in fashion, things have got a lot better in recent times. Trans models such as Andreja Pejić and Hari Nef have experienced a huge amount of success, booking shows for the likes of Marc Jacobs and Gucci respectively. As one model in the trailer says, “A decade ago, we were hiding on the runways but now, it’s a new age.”
