Emerging in the mid-80s in Seattle, the style is associated with the subgenre of alternative rock of the same name. But despite the renaissance it’s experiencing – to which this list attests – grunge was always an anti-fashion style movement at its core, marked by its not too bothered, low maintenance, scruffy aesthetic. With Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain as its posterboy, key signifiers of the movement include bleached hair, distressed denim, dirty plaid. But why is grunge experiencing a renaissance? Is it part of the broader 90s revival or is it something else? Perhaps it’s down to the reignition of people’s interest in Cobain following the release of Brett Morgen’s documentary about the late musician, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck in August. Authorised by his family, the film features some of his home videos and offers an unadulterated insight into his heroin addiction and the mystery surrounding his suicide. Interest in Cobain was also evident on the runways; Saint Laurent SS16 was inspired, at least in part, by the musician. Many models had bleached hair and wore white sunglasses similar to Cobain’s, along with denim, plaid and even some peeks of leopard print. Along with the most reblogged fashion trends, Tumblr have also revealed the most reblogged models of the year – a list which is topped by the cover star of Dazed’s Winter 2014 issue, Kendall Jenner. Cara Delevingne comes in second, closely followed by Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss and Candice Swanepoel. But it’s not all (relatively) new faces; Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss also feature on the list. The presence of these models – who are largely associated with the 90s – also demonstrates the current resurgence of interest in the decade. Watch the trailer for Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck below:
