Initial Reaction:

Opening Ceremony’s Humberto Leon and Carol Lim put on their curator hats to present an AW15 collection and exhibition in tribute to the photography of their long-time friend Spike Jonze, who last season staged a play for their SS15 collection.

The art of dressing with ease:

The collection featured never-before-seen 35mm candids from Jonze’s personal archive, rendered into digital prints decorating on woven t-shirts and babydoll dresses. Even handwriting from his contact sheets – scribbled daisies, arrows and personal notes – added an unexpected dimension to jacquards and prints. The collection mixed relaxed and dressed up silhouettes, from Kodak-branded crewneck tees and cozy cardigans, to knee-grazing skirts and menswear-inspired jackets. Unexpected materials such as wool, lurex, rabbit fur and sequins completed the collection’s concept of juxtaposition. 

“Please Use Your Best Judgement”:

With Spike Jonze’s personal work serving as the inspiration for the collection, the context of a gallery exhibition curated by Humberto and Carol served as the most natural and ideal environment in which to present it – reminding viewers that fashion is not only about clothes, but also the scene, culture and creativity that surrounds and fuels it. The exhibition, entitled “Please Use Your Best Judgement”, featured two decades worth of Jonze’s photographic work from 1985-2005 – documenting everything from the rise of BMX and skateboarding subcultures and early Sonic Youth tours, to shots from Björk’s video for the song “Triumph Of A Heart” from the Medúlla album in 2004. Cut-collage patterns of Chloë Sevigny, Drew Barrymore and Mark Gonzales were also amongst the digitally printed celebrities, seen within the kaleidoscopic creations.
