Rock bands have always inspired their own corners of subcultural style, and the crowd at My Chemical Romance’s Glasgow show last week was no exception. In the hours leading up to the band’s Bellahouston Park performance, the Glasgow Subway was filled with fans in unmistakable emo-goth attire: brightly coloured hair, dark clothing and outfits that paid tribute The Black Parade, two decades on from its release.

Captured by photographer Marilena Vlachopoulou, the crowd was a sea of hot pink, electric blue and, of course, jet black hair dye. Faces were washed in white paint and scrawled with thick black liner, while loosened ties hung around necks paired with slogan tees, fishnets, battered Dr Martens and gothic wedding dresses. For many, dressing up was as much a part of the experience as the concert itself.

“I really loved seeing the two generations of fans, parents bringing their teenage kids to share the experience together through wind and rain,“ shares Vlachopoulou. “No matter what age you are, this is a band that has always been like a safe space for so many of us who feel like the outsider.’“

For Vlachopoulou, photographing the fans was just as exciting as seeing the band itself. “It was amazing to see all the work, commitment and creativity that went into everyone’s looks,“ she says. “As a fellow fan, I’ll never shake this kid-in-a-candy-store feeling of documenting these events.“

Her favourite portrait came by chance after the show, when she accidentally walked onto the wrong train platform and found herself face-to-face with a fan dressed as Mother War, one of The Black Parade’s fictional characters. “It felt like a full-circle moment,“ she says. “I used to have the album artwork hanging on my bedroom wall growing up. The colours in this image really speak to me and add to this otherworldly feeling.
