They’re also a vital element of any creative process, from painting to poetry. Appropriate, then, that Molton Brown – a British brand with a long heritage of unique, high-quality fragrances – is bringing together some of its iconic scents with a varied lineup of creative voices for Artists of Note, the beginning of a new era that shines a light on the artistry of its perfumers. One of the standout collaborators in this initiative is none other than punk poet Dr. John Cooper Clarke. Clarke brings his sharp wit and distinctive style to reimagine Coastal Cypress & Sea Fennel, a fragrance created by senior perfumer Carla Chabert, as a poem titled À la recherche du temps fondu (read it in the gallery above). With notes of cardamom, bergamot, and marine elements, the scent itself has a certain freshness – a “tonic” as Clarke describes it – evoking the layered sensory experience of seaside nostalgia. So I used cold elements, and spicy cold elements, and everything that reminded me of the colour blue.” In his signature spoken-word delivery, Clarke delves into the multidimensional nature of scent, noting how fragrance often escapes the confines of language. “You can only get into a reverie of remembrance,” he muses, highlighting the visceral and evocative power of perfume. His interpretation of Coastal Cypress & Sea Fennel adds a poetic dimension to the fragrance, transforming it into an emotional journey through memory and place. More than a ‘campaign’, to Molton Brown Artists of Note is a bold cultural move, fusing scent with art and the vibrant personalities who embody it. With creatives like Dr. John Cooper Clarke on board, the brand is firmly positioning itself at the intersection of luxury fragrance and artistic expression.
