Icy eyeshadow, colourful highlight streaks, space buns, and an absolute shitload of butterfly clips – Olivia Rodrigo’s music video for new single “Brutal” is here and it’s a tribute to Y2K everything. Think the beauty and fashion looks of Jawbreaker, Mean Girls, Lizzie McGuire, The Simple Life, and The Fifth Element thrown into a blender and then finished off with some anime-inspired face sticker filters sprinkled on top.

Paying homage to bitchy teen dramas of the early 2000s, the Petra Collins-directed music video sees Rodrigo transformed into eight different avatars, all rocking highly stylised beauty looks including a Leeloo-esque orange bob and high pigtails with magenta accents. Surrounded by a cast of mall brat friends and teen heartthrob boys (Euphoria’s Lukas Gage and Booksmart’s Nico Hiraga), Rodrigo sings about the angst of being alive and a teenager: “I’m not cool and I’m not smart / And I can’t even parallel park” she cries. Cher Horowitz would be proud.

Rodrigo’s go-to hairstylist Clayton Hawkins created the singer’s wide range of hair looks while make-up came courtesy of Molly Greenwald, who kept things slightly more subtle with simple eye looks and the hyperglossy, lacquered lips of the noughties. Hairstylist Ricky Fraser and make-up artist Jessica deBen Polish, meanwhile, took on the beauty of the supporting characters.

To help you recreate the eight distinctive looks from the video, below we’ve put together a little guide so that you can get the mall brat look at home. Then, head on over to Dazed Fashion and delve into the niche style references here.
