Get the mall brat look
Icy eyeshadow, colourful highlight streaks, space buns, and an absolute shitload of butterfly clips – Olivia Rodrigo’s music video for new single “Brutal” is here and it’s a tribute to Y2K everything. Think the beauty and fashion looks of Jawbreaker, Mean Girls, Lizzie McGuire, The Simple Life, and The Fifth Element thrown into a blender and then finished off with some anime-inspired face sticker filters sprinkled on top.
Paying homage to bitchy teen dramas of the early 2000s, the Petra Collins-directed music video sees Rodrigo transformed into eight different avatars, all rocking highly stylised beauty looks including a Leeloo-esque orange bob and high pigtails with magenta accents. Surrounded by a cast of mall brat friends and teen heartthrob boys (Euphoria’s Lukas Gage and Booksmart’s Nico Hiraga), Rodrigo sings about the angst of being alive and a teenager: “I’m not cool and I’m not smart / And I can’t even parallel park” she cries. Cher Horowitz would be proud.
Rodrigo’s go-to hairstylist Clayton Hawkins created the singer’s wide range of hair looks while make-up came courtesy of Molly Greenwald, who kept things slightly more subtle with simple eye looks and the hyperglossy, lacquered lips of the noughties. Hairstylist Ricky Fraser and make-up artist Jessica deBen Polish, meanwhile, took on the beauty of the supporting characters.
To help you recreate the eight distinctive looks from the video, below we’ve put together a little guide so that you can get the mall brat look at home. Then, head on over to Dazed Fashion and delve into the niche style references here.

Fighter #1
The first character we are introduced to is a ballerina with an ice-blue bob with baby bangs. This statement hair is the focus, while the make-up takes more of a backseat – kept simple with a winged eyed and pink lip gloss.
Achieve this look with your favourite liquid eyeliner, we like the Tom Ford Eye Defining Pen, and Juicy Tubes in the shade Magic Spell for an authentic 2000s glossy lip. For the hair itself, go for a wig like Rodrigo or, if you’re looking for a more permanent option, try Bleach London’s Washed Up Mermaid. Cartoon eyes across your face – optional.

Fighter #2
After a brutal snap of the ankle while en pointe, Rodrigo’s ballerina falls to earth and loses the technicolour hair. In its place comes a more traditional slicked back bun although she retains some playfully brash rebellion with dark blue accents sticking out of her bun.
Achieve this look with blue clip-in hair extensions, for example these ones from Claire’s which you can get for the very reasonable price of £3.00. Make-up is kept the same as fantasy ballerina, but if you want to take things to the next level, draw on the heart filters with this pink NYX eyeliner pencil or go simpler while still keeping the spirit with Milk Makeup’s heart stamp.

Fighter #3
Next up is news anchor Rodrigo who pairs a stunning magenta Vivienne Westwood suit with matching pink lips, pearls, a bright blonde bob, and, of course, lots of face stickers. Achieve this look with Zara’s Ultimatte Matte Lipstick in the shade Knockout, and Bleach London’s Total Bleach Kit and Champagne Toner for that bubbly golden finish.

Fighter #4
Our next avatar is a Britney Spears-esque pop star in a metallic silver outfit and orange wig being pulled around and prodded at a photoshoot for a soft drink (“who am I if not exploited” Rodrigo sings pointedly over the scene). The filter in this scene looks like cracks creeping down across her face with blood droplets dripping down, while rose thorns in her arm leave a bloody wound. Pop star Rodrigo is not doing so well.
Achieve this look with Bleach London’s Burnt Peach Super Cool Colour hair dye, the Tom Ford Eye Defining Pen to draw on all the cracks, and Britney’s Curious perfume for added pop star authenticity.

Fighter #5
Miranda Sanchez is that you? Rodrigo channels Lizzie McGuire’s BFF in her next look which features a cherry red newsboy cap, waist-length braids, and a choker.
To get the look, you’ll need an almost e-girl amount of blush across your nose and cheeks. Try Mac Cosmetics Powder Blush in the shade Pink Swoon. For lips get a neutral pink like Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk lipstick, and finish it all off with a silver sheen powder on your eyelids, for example the shade Star from the Anastasia Beverly Hills Moonchild Glow Kit.

Fighter #6
While hanging out in her room with Nico Hiraga, Rodrigo’s next character has loaded up on the necklaces, tied her hair into two, low-slung space buns held back by a bandana, and added a healthy helping of lip gloss.
To get the look, start off with an absolutely flawless base – you can’t go wrong with Armani Luminous Silk foundation – and add some highlight drops like these ones from L’Oréal Paris for an added glow. Finish off the look with Pat McGrath’s Divine Ross lip gloss or Soap and Glory’s Sexy Mother Pucker Pillow Plump XXL if you are looking for an added plumpness. And don’t forget the bandana!

Fighter #7
Next up is a character that wouldn’t look out of place on The Simple Life, or maybe The Hills. That is to say she is sporting the long peroxide blonde hair, small pink handbag, and extremely low-rise jeans favoured by many 2000s girls of the Paris Hilton variety.
Once again, you will be reaching for the bleach to achieve this look as well as some Ashley Williams hair pins to hold those flowing locks in place. Juicy Tubes are an absolute must for this look if you really want to nail the aesthetic. Try Framboise Pop to match your bag, tiny dog not included.

Fighter #8
Last but not least we have my favourite look of the bunch. Rodrigo’s final avatar sports some sick platform boots like the ones I used to admire through the Cyberdog store windows in Camden as a teenager, two partial ponytails with burgundy streaks running through it, and a shitload of hair clips.
To get this look, you’ll first want to load up on the clips. Places like Depop and Etsy will be your best friends here as well as Tort. Then get some red clip-in hair extensions or bleach some streaked highlights into your hair and dye them. Finish the look off with your favourite lip gloss, some rosy eyeshadow like Laura Mercier RoseGlow Caviar Stick Eye Colour, and a scrunchie on your wrist.
