When the first saga of lockdown was inflicted nationwide this year, it prompted our experimental and daring sides to surface in order to cut through the mundane days that lay ahead. How? By opening the intrepid bathroom cupboard and reaching for the scissors and the bleach.
From makeshift cuts to bleached brows or whether you razored them off entirely, you might still be lusting for the arches you once had in March. And thanks to Isamaya Ffrench – Burberry Beauty’s global beauty director – you don’t have to be so reckless about it come lockdown 3.0.
The make-up artist shares the secret behind achieving fake bleached brows in a step-by-step video tutorial for Dazed Beauty. From gluing, powdering to concealing, Ffrench reveals the steps behind the signature look used in Burberry’s AW20 show – all of which you can try yourself using Burberry Beauty.
“It’s great to be working alongside Riccardo – someone whose creative vision I have admired for a long time,” shares Ffrench. “I feel very lucky to have his leadership because I believe in what he has to say as a designer and creator and so feel assured that what we make together will be beautiful. I feel excited when I see the campaign proposals because they’re always going to be unusual and fun to create together.
The signature red lip and bleached eye combo creates a natural effect, underscored with a bold edge. “It’s sophisticated, modern, and edgy,” notes Ffrench, encapsulating the Burberry aesthetic. “It's an English heritage brand and as I'm about as English as it gets, I can definitely relate to that. In line with Riccardo’s vision. I’m fully behind it and I love how he has transformed Burberry into a sexy, modern, contemporary luxury brand. I love his use of minimalism and maximalism and I think there is space for that in the beauty market too.”
Her statement approach, carefully crafting each arch challenges beauty traditions, opening up the face and adjusting the appearance by altering a traditionally bold feature unique to each individual, and reversing its intention as near-transparent. “I look for unconventional sources of inspiration because that’s what allows you to be a pioneer in beauty,” she says. “What makes me feel beautiful – usually when something is ‘off’ like bleached brows – may not be what someone else finds beautiful, and I find that to be what makes beauty so interesting and fun.”
