Martha Stewart likes to eat 20 CBD gummies at one go

Is she OK?

CBD has reached peak rich white lady at a meditation retreat levels of bougie wellness. How do we know? Because Martha Stewart has come out with her own line of CBD gummies or as she calls them CBD pâte de fruit.

The CBD industry has boomed in recent years and now, with the chronic levels of stress we’ve been experiencing thanks to the global pandemic, more of us than ever are turning to CBD products to help calm our anxious minds and bodies. 49 per cent of millennial CBD consumers said they planned to use more CBD during the pandemic. With the industry set to be worth $22 billion by 2022, Stewart has decided she wants a piece of that CBD pie.

Teaming up with Canadian cannabis company Canopy Growth, Stewart has released a collection of CBD gummies as well as oil drops and softgels in a range of fruity flavours including kumquat and blood orange. CBD treats for pets are also said to be in the works.

To discuss her new range, Stewart sat down with The New York Times where she shared some amazing details including how she was introduced to cannabis by her friend Snoop Dogg during the Justin Bieber Roast in 2015. “We sat next to each other for seven hours,” she says. “Snoop must have smoked 10 giant fat blunts, and I inhaled all that smoke. I felt really good.”

“I had to fly that night, my family was in Saint Barths for Christmas vacation. I don’t remember going on the plane. I don’t remember doing anything. I didn’t remember my performance on the roast, but it was very successful.”

Stewart also drops how much of a fan she is of her own products, being known to ingest gummies up into the double figures in one sitting. “I pop 20 of them and just feel OK, but some of my friends do two and feel high, I don’t know why. It’s not high like a marijuana high. It’s a CBD high, like, relaxed,” she says. During the hour-long Zoom conversation, the NYT notes she eats four gummies. “You don’t think that you’re eating anything but pâte de fruit,” she says. “I’m having a black raspberry right now.”

All this begs the question – is Martha OK? And also is this a safe habit? On the website for the collection, it recommends you take 2-3 gummies daily. Stewart is knocking back ten times this amount. Each gummy contains 10mg of CBD which totals to 200mg in one go. Unlike other supplements, the FDA has not created a recommended daily intake for CBD, which means CBD does not have an official serving size making it tricky to pin down an optimal dosage.

Honest Marijuana, a cannabis company that sells products ranging from blunts to THC mints, however, suggests that a 180-pound male suffering from severe pain would only need to take 25 milligrams at most to feel relief. Meanwhile, Lauren Grossman, MD, an emergency medicine physician and medical director of the UCHealth Integrative Medical Center, told Refinery29, “CBD from industrial hemp is usually prescribed this way: 5-15 mg two to three times per day, which brings it to 45 mg max for the day.”

Based on that, it seems like Stewart may be taking on slightly more than would be recommended by medical professionals. We would suggest instead starting with one and going from there, increasingly your dosage slowly. And remember if you are unsure about anything, please consult with your doctor.
