The new film from Justin Simien, creator of Dear White People, takes place in 1989 and follows the story of Anna Bludso (newcomer Elle Lorraine) who has a salon experience turned nightmare after she is asked to change her Afro hairstyle for her image-obsessed job. “Client’s swear this stuff is magic,” hairstylist Virgie (Laverne Cox) can be heard ominously saying in the trailer over shots of Anna crying and a harrowing montage of bloody scalps and wretching sounds of twisting flesh as she has a weave put in. After Anna gets the weave, a series of terrifying hauntings seemingly controlled by her new hair start occurring and the bodies begin piling up. Also featuring appearances from Lena Waithe, Kelly Rowland, Usher, and Vanessa Williams, Bad Hair is a satire horror movie speaking to the modern day Black female experience. “In Bad Hair I wanted to use the language of psychological thrillers and classics in the horror genre to interrogate how systems of white supremacy are often disguised as opportunities for Black people,” the director has said. “I also wanted to showcase Black women in a genre that typically excludes them as well as celebrate the last black renaissance of the late 80s and 90s.” Just in time for Halloween, Bad Hair arrives on Hulu on October 23.
