Sheet masks have taken the beauty industry by storm. Thanks to everyone from Brooke Shields to Kaia Gerber posting an obligatory Hannibal Lecter style selfie, Korea’s best-kept beauty secret has evolved into a 283 million dollar worldwide market that is expected to double by 2026. Sheet masks, often made of fibre, cotton, cellulose fabrics or coconut pulp, are infused with hydrating active ingredients which, when applied to the face, are absorbed by the skin while the physical mask acts as a barrier to prevent the ingredients from evaporating. But you probably know all of this. What you might not know, however, is that people are now using sheet masks on their breasts. Introducing the boob mask. Consisting of glandular tissue, connective tissue, ductal lobule units, ligaments, and fat, your breasts are two of the most sensitive and nerve-responsive areas of the whole body. They are also prone to fluctuation, a result of hormonal changes, menstruation, weight gain or loss, even swelling up to 25% when you’re turned on. The skin around the breasts, therefore, goes through a lot. The biggest stressor, however, is ageing. “As we age, connective tissue, which suspends the breasts up and acts as our natural underwire of the breast, gets stretched,” says Dr Amanda Wheeler, MD, a breast surgeon at Stanford Health Care and clinical assistant professor of surgery at the Stanford University School of Medicine in California. “The breast skin begins to lose elasticity, too, and both contribute to sagging.” As your chest has fewer oil glands than your face, elasticity (what makes boobs “bounce”) and moisture are hard to keep in, especially when exposed to harsh environmental factors (sun damage, pollution, acne). But it’s not just wrinkles and sagging that can affect your breasts, it’s dry nipples and acne and sunburn. Which is why brands have started introducing sheet masks designed specifically to tackle all your breast problems. Here we round-up the best boob masks out there, so you can live your breast life.
