“I feel most beautiful when I’m photoshopped to look like a creature from another world,” says 21-year-old Californian Ryon Wu. One look at his Instagram, @ryon01, and this starts to make sense. Originally of Chinese/ Vietnamese heritage, Ryon’s aesthetic is anime-character-meets-boy-from-the-future, framed against an inherently dystopic background of nuclear power stations and American trees whipping in hurricane wind.
Currently living in Fontana, California, Wu works as a waiter by day at his parents’ restaurant to pay the bills, but by night he appears in music videos, models for brands like MAISON the FAUX and just generally engages in a radical self-transformation, utilising the immense power of both fashion and make-up. These days, Wu boasts a following of 32.6k online thanks to his hypnotic looks, futuristic vibe, and out of this world editing skills.
