Thousands of anti-Brexit protesters will descend on London this coming weekend to challenge the government’s plans to see the UK leave the EU.

Unite for Europe sees pro-EU groups from across the UK call for the government to listen to the 48 percent who voted against Brexit. Their website states: “fundamentally, we never wanted Brexit and this march is about making our voices heard.” Organisers detail the failure to “protect EU nationals who work and pay taxes in the UK”, and challenge the “handful of people who decide the future of many behind closed doors”.

News today related that prime minister Theresa May intends to trigger Article 50 on March 29 – which will officially begin negotiations for the UK to leave the EU. The protest will respond to this. March 25, the day of the march, is also the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome, which established the European Economic Community from which the UK has benefited.

The group also detail their claim that Brexit divides communities and incites hate – something we saw firsthand when hate crime exploded in the weeks after the referendum last June. Campaigners also call out the lies that permeated the leave campaign, like the millions promised to the NHS. They also relate that it’s the “old” deciding the “future of the young” – this refers to the statistics from YouGov that confirm 75 per cent of 18-24-year-olds voted to remain, while over-65s were twice as likely to vote leave. A crowdfunder earlier this month raised over £76k to help pull the march off. 

The march is calling for the government to engage in an open conversation about the future. It also calls for the UK to remain a member of the Single Market – something that has been disputed – and for a guarantee to confirm EU citizens already in the UK can stay.

It’s intended that people marching will walk to the Parliament building. You can join in at Park Lane on March 25 at 11am.
