The Denis Villeneuve-directed film, which has been in the pipeline for over 30 years, is set to finally be released on October 6 2017. While there are no details yet on who any of the actors will be playing, both Villeneuve and producer Ridley Scott have dropped hints over the sequel’s storyline. According to them, it will be set several decades after the 2019 setting of the original, with characters battling a kind of man-made apocalypse. “The climate has gone berserk – the ocean, the rain, the snow is all toxic,” explained the film’s director in an interview last month. “Things seem to have generally become more horrible since the first movie, as humanity has continually trashed the planet and ignored the consequences. It might not be particularly subtle, but it does seem appropriately Blade Runner-y; after all most animals had been eradicated and replaced by synthetics by the time of the first film. Nature is obviously next to go.” Similarly, Ridley Scott – who helmed the 1982 original – revealed an extremely descriptive account of the sequel’s opening scenes during a talk at the AFI festival last year; mentioning ravaged landscapes, flying cars, and “Grapes of Wrath-type” cottages. “I’m not going to say anything else,” he teased. “You’ll have to go see the movie.” Escape the algorithm!
