Once dubbed by Rolling Stone as “the most hated man on the internet”, Moore is most known for inventing the extra vile IsAnyoneUp.com. Used by spiteful exes and heartbroken psychopaths, the site allows people to post pictures of nude women, taken from their previous relationships, without their permission. It also includes the victim’s full name, address, place of work and social media profile. In other words, it’s a site that degrades and destroys thousands of women’s lives. Unfortunately, while the UK and Ireland have now made revenge porn illegal, the US is still yet to catch up. This means that non-consensual pornography is still very much alive and well in many states – and that Hunter Moore’s prison sentence actually doesn’t have much to do with what he did to these women. Instead, his charges are to do with “unauthorised access to a computer” and “aggravated identity theft” – which basically means that he was indicted for hacking into people’s computers and stealing photos. As well as having to serve a (paltry) two and a half year sentence for the crimes, Moore was also fined $2000 by a LA district judge – plus (an even more paltry) $145.70 in restitution to his victims. His sentencing documents were also sealed for the sake of his privacy – which would obviously be laughable if it wasn’t so terrifyingly awful. While the sentence is nowhere near as long as he deserves, though, at least it’s something. The world will hopefully be a marginally better place for the next two years. But, if you'd like to see what you can do to help make his sentence longer – and stop women from having to copyright their own bodies – you can sign up to endrevengeporn.org. Escape the algorithm!
