Remember Google Glass? Just about, right? The doomed wearable tech suffered an inauspicious launch and was axed earlier this year, although Google Glass 2 is in the works. People were so freaked that people might be recording their every move that one "Glasshole" (as they became known) was assaulted in San Francisco. It’s easy to see why people found it hard to reconcile with the idea that strangers may be secretly filming them, so how is 3RDi, a new headband fitted with "a camera that captures your life", any different? We caught up with the team to speak to them about the product that they hope to deliver in June 2016.

How long has this project been in the works?

3RDi: We have been working on the 3RDi project since beginning of 2014.

We’ve already seen the rise and fall of Google Glass? How is this different?

3RDi: 3RDi is a new class of technology called "Corona". I think that humanity has become a slave to technology, we give it too much attention, time and energy, mostly because people don’t know how to design technology and or how to use it. And it’s always evolving, with more options, buttons, features and menus, all of which requires constant learning and relearning – eventually we are the ones who become obsolete. I believe Steve Jobs’ success was in the "simplification and accessibility of technology" making technology work for the user, not the other way around.

That being said, seeing people walking around holding up their smartphones, living life through a screen and giving it more attention instead of enjoying the moment with their family and friends is sad! The 3RDi is a technology that works for the user! Put it on, turn it on and carry on. Enjoy the present moment, interact with your environment and the people around you, capture your life and then share these moments online on the internet, which in turn creates great content, and that’s what makes the internet amazing.

Sure, but are you not concerned that this type of wearable tech will freak people out who think their privacy is being invaded? How do you combat that?

3RDi: Whatever humans create can be used for good or for evil. I am creating a device that permits you to capture your present moment just like a smartphone or camera, just in a more convenient way, Just like any piece of technology, wearing a 3RDi at the appropriate time and place is something to practice and apply –and when you're not using it, just hang it around your neck.

Do you believe that soon everyone will be wearing devices like this?

3RDi: The 3RDi is a versatile techware that it can be used in many activities, industries and professions, so yes, if for example you’re a reporter and want to cover a news event, it's a perfect device for interviews or to cover stories on the ground. The power of a device which works for you and captures everything you see, letting you recover visual and audio data in order to complete a task or for entertainment purposes, is how a real piece of technology should work, while giving you an amazing experience and the freedom to enjoy the moment. We already do this with smartphones and camera but it's so much easier and convenient with the 3RDi that I believe it will become a must have accessory.

Do you think it's important to record and archive every personal moment in our lives?

3RDi: Indeed, we are already doing it with cameras and smartphones, but it’s only when we are lucky or patient that we get the best moments of our lives, when using the 3RDi, you can get it all. Sometimes, we forget how amazing we are – we run marathons, hike mountains and create friendships and those amazing memories come and go is a split second.

Occasionally we do capture those moments on a picture or video and when we look back at them, we are surprised and impressed, while wishing that we could have taken the time to capture more, so as to relive and share these emotions. The 3RDi does all of that.
