Rounding off State of Literature week, we welcome Gabby Bess and her all-girl takeover. The writer and poet behind Illuminati Girl Gang is dedicated to challenging preconceptions about female expression in art: she told us about her heroines, as well as curated a selection of female-penned lit that refuses to bow down. What do we know about Ana Carrete? We know that she most concertedly does not have penis envy (as her various social media channels tell us). We also know that she founded and edits New Wave Vomit, the alt-lit zine that recently rose from the digital ashes of the world wide web (we wrote about its best moments to celebrate its return, here). But, for today's guest edit's purposes, she's here in honour of her own poetic output. Selected by Gabby Bess, Carrete shared her latest zine with Dazed: the ingeniusly named Why Fi (no punctuation, here – questioning inflection optional). Honest to a fault, her poems possess the frank outlook of a millennial gal with all the insights of her feminist ancestors. Just check them out – and don't ask why.
