The inside story of last weekend's epic five-a-side football tournament
Last Saturday saw the likes of Numbers, Fabric, RBMA, Arena Homme+, i-D, Vice, XL, and Domino Records go head-to-head in a series of fierce battles for the glory of the Boiler Room Fives trophy in Hackney Downs. Underdogs Dazed FC were drawn in the "group of death" and had to play last year's champions NTS Radio, hot favourites BNTL and South London's Ninja Tune in order to progress to the next round. Unsurprisingly for a team whose idea of exercise is pulling an all-nighter at Plex, they keeled out early and went straight to the bar. Clothing boutique PRESENT and R&S records fought it out in the final, with PRESENT eventually winning 2-0.
"We may have lost all three of our matches, but Dazed FC showed grit, determination and above all else, style and grace in the face of overwhelming odds," said player-manager Tim Noakes afterwards. "But most importantly we had the best supporters, including the Dazed Hot Squad cheerleaders who literally kept the players' spirits up by plying us with Gin n' Tonic and beer throughout. Just a shame no-one packed any suncream. This is just the beginning for Dazed FC. Now we have a sexy Umbro kit, the Dazed Hot Squad in tow and an unbreakable team spirit, there is no doubt that we will go on to clinch the Boiler Room Fives title next year. Until then you can find us in Homerton A&E."
