Ahead of its public opening, Dazed Club members were invited to an exclusive private view of Resurgence: Craft Reimagined at Hackney Downs Studios last week. With refreshments from Ghost Labs and Dalston’s Soda, the evening gave members the chance to see the exhibition before anyone else and connect with other creatives.

Ajahee Sekkm-Miles brought the exhibition to life after responding to a Dazed Club open call with her curatorial proposal, ultimately being selected from 60 applicants. Her show brings together four artists, Favour Jonathan, Shayla Marshall, Ṣọlá Olúlòde and Tyreis Holder, whose practices explore craft through personal connections to heritage, history and tradition.

Three of the artists joined the private view, meeting Dazed Clubbers and speaking about the ideas and processes behind their work. Each piece in the exhibition was carefully selected by Sekkm-Miles for both its craft-based medium and the way it reimagines cultural lineage through contemporary practice.

Music boomed through the space as guests were exploring the exhibition, with DJ sets from Talia Goddess and KLIPKILLA (Sekkm-Miles’ alias), who weaved in house, electro, and global diasporic sounds – the perfect sonic accompaniment to the exhibition’s themes.

Photographers Courteney Frisby and Blanca Ruedas captured the atmosphere on the night – check out the photo gallery below!

Resurgence: Craft Reimagined is open to the public at The Gallery at Hackney Downs Studios from Friday 13 March until Thursday 2 April (10am-5pm daily). Alongside the exhibition, a programme of public events will also take place – keep an eye on the Dazed Club app for updates and how to attend.
