Iñárritu’s Amores Perros has gripped audiences with its gritty portrayal of Mexico City’s shadowy, brutal underworld. Starring Emilio Echevarría, Goya Toledo, Gael García Bernal, and Marco Pérez, the film follows three thrilling interconnected stories of lust, revenge, rivalry, fear and ambition which collide when a car crash brings the ensemble cast dramatically into each others’ orbits. To celebrate its 25 year anniversary (and coinciding with exhibitions at Lago Algo in Mexico City, LACMA in Los Angeles, and Fondazione Prada in Milan) a new book will delve into the behind-the-scenes world of Amores Perros with previously unseen on-set photography, the director’s handwritten notes, storyboards, stills, texts by critics and collaborators, and scene-breakdowns of this intricately-plotted masterpiece. Made in close collaboration with Iñárritu, who went on to direct such classics as Babel and 21 Grams, the book (published by MACK) will present a new perspective on this celebrated work. Due to be released in September this year, the book is not only an in-depth exploration of Amores Perros but a profoundly illuminating look at the process of filmmaking and world-building. Visit the gallery above for a closer look at some stills and a selection of storyboards, and reacquaint yourself with the exhilarating, compelling atmosphere of the original film. Available for pre-order here now, Amores Perros by Alejandro González Iñárritu will be released this September from MACK. © Fernando Llanos, from Amores Perros (MACK, 2025).
