Last week (September 25), Dazed Club members were invited to an exclusive after-hours tour of Zanele Muholi’s blockbuster exhibition, currently on show at Tate Modern. As a major retrospective, the show surveys some of the most important work from the South African visual activist’s oeuvre – including their renowned series of portraits, Faces and Phases – alongside new photographic and sculptural works.

Almost 200 Club members turned up for the private view and were welcomed by curator Carine Harmond, who talked through Muholi’s work documenting and celebrating the lives of Black queer, transgender and non-conforming South Africans.

Some attendees chose to enjoy the exhibition at their own pace, while some toured the show with Harmond, who shed light on the curatorial concept underpinning this epic exhibition.

The night concluded with a drinks reception, where Clubbers were able to mingle, meet the Tate team, and discuss the show while enjoying the rare opportunity to have the gallery to themselves for the night. Dazed Club member Melissa Anaman was there to document the whole experience – visit the gallery above for a closer look.
