All of the artists in Angelica Jopling’s autumn 2023 Incubator programme are holding their debut solo exhibitions, presented in a fast-paced series of six individual shows. The aim? To transport people directly to London’s creative heart as seen through the eyes of its rising stars, representing work across a wide range of media.
“This upcoming series showcases a rich tapestry of artistic expression,” says Jopling, in a statement. “The work of these six talented artists spans sculpture, sound, ceramic, installation and painting, offering a compelling glimpse into the diversity of practice at the root of London’s thriving art scene.”
Past iterations of the Incubator programme have already proven the founder and curator’s commitment to spotlighting young and upcoming artists, with an emphasis on creating community and celebrating the diversity of creative expression. Running from September to December, 2023, the second half of Incubator 23 intends to continue the tradition, with an additional events programme adding performers such as poets, dancers, and musicians into the mix to encourage cross-pollination.
The shows themselves will begin on September 20 with a showcase of pillowy, shimmering sculptures by Canadian artist Julia Thompson, before moving on to an exhibition of oversized reclining nudes by Elinor Stanley, exploring the mixed emotions – tenderness and cruelty, humour and embarrassment – associated with figurative painting.
In late October, Mia Graham will take over the exhibition space with a series of ethereal paintings, which see faces and bodies emerge from countless layers of paint, followed by Oleksandra Martson, a Ukrainian figurative artist, whose work explores the human body as a symbol of our inner selves.
The programme is rounded out by Lucas Dupuy, whose abstract artworks take inspiration from 20th century Brutalist architecture, and finally Fleur Dempsey, who will present a meditative take on “slow looking” via works that direct attention to seemingly-ephemeral objects and cast them in a new light.
