Wolfgang Tillmans led the creative charge for the UK remaining in the European Union. Now, the artist has joined up with architect Rem Koolhaas and architecture historian Stephan Petermann in a call-out for artists to help rebrand the EU.
Tillmans posted his latest political creative venture to Instagram, asking artists to join them at Eurolab and the four-day ‘Act for Democracy!’ event as part of the Forum on European Culture to workshop ideas on how to better communicate the EU. Creative people can submit poems, scripts, designs, imagery, and artwork that they believe would help in a new campaign for Europe, as Artnet reports.
Proposals can be submitted for consideration up until April 18. A panel of experts will examine the works “that can be developed and contribute to a clear yet multi-faceted campaign” according to Tillmans.
Tillmans, who ran a pro-remain art campaign in the run-up to the Brexit referendum, writes on Instagram of the escalating challenge to Europe by the far-right and “nationalist and divisive language”. Countries like Germany, France, Austria, and Italy have seen a sharp rise in nationalism. European elections will take place in May 2019, so Tillmans, Koolhaas, and Petermann hope to create a successful counter movement.
Since 2001, Koolhas has been working on the project The Image of Europe, redesigning European logos and the flag.
The Forum will see the trio and participants examining the past 25 years of Europe, reflecting on its successes and failures, and laying the groundwork to create materials that will mount a pro-Europe campaign. Workshops, talks, and debates will also take place across the event in Amsterdam from May 31 through June 3.
