Emilio's Darkness

Published 17 months ago

Mexican photographer and illustrator engulfed in Gothic darkness lists his inspirations

Mexico City-based photographer, painter and illustrator Emilio has a distinctive, dark style that has gained him a reputation both in his home country and the USA. Having had solo shows at galleries across Mexico and at the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation in Miami, his mainly black ink paintings and drawings depict gothic Tim Burton-esque characters.

Dazed Digital: How would you describe your work?
Emilio: Simple and popular; a craft made by a lumpen proletariat; videos made in a delayed moment of adolescence.

DD: What influences you?
Emilio: I find inspiration in cigarettes, my family, some friends, movies that I see, short relationships, and the mysteries of the Third World, in this case Mexico City.

DD: Who inspires you?
Emilio: Mexican people, the Brazilian people, Larry Clark, Philippe Grandrieux, Vito Schnabel, Nick Cave, Keith Richards, David Byrne, David Lynch, David Bowie, Ryan McGinley, Megan Fox, Jean-Michel Cousteau, Dennis Hopper, Jimmy Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, John Cassavetes, Kristen Stewart, Lily Cole, Ana-Beatriz-Barros, Adriana Lima, Axl Rose, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Anthony Goicolea, and many others...
