"So this is the real deal right here; the essence of the gypsy spirit, not some fucking Basement Jaxx remix," remarked an elated Eugene Hutz onstage with The Kolpakov Trio last night at the ICA.

Wry jabs aside, it really was the genuine article. Tickets for the show featuring the irrepressible Gogol Bordello front-man alongside Russian gypsy folk legend, Sasha Kolpakov, and his trio had sold out months previous.  After all, this was a one-off.

Following the screening of The Pied Piper of Hutzovina, director Pavla Fleischer's documentary tracing Hütz's family's gypsy roots in his native Ukraine, the hour-long show with Kolpakov held a captive audience with authentic, stomping Roma soul.

"I took pride in just being a passenger along for the ride with Sasha," said a humbled Hütz afterwards. "There was no ambition to interfere or bastardise his music at all. It was his night."

Needless to say, a heady vodka fuelled after-party on the decks with Hütz and DJ Scratchy added the finishing touches to an essential night of gypsy culture and adventure.
