South Korean news agency Yonhap are reporting that the singer, born Kim Jong-hyun, was found unconscious in a rented apartment in Seoul after being alerted by his sister, and that he was later pronounced dead at hospital. Police have said that they will investigate the possibility of suicide as a cause of death. SHINee have released five EPs and five studio albums in South Korea and five albums in Japan since they were formed by the SM Entertainment media company in 2008. Jonghyun, a skilled singer and dancer, also contributed writing and production to SHINee’s albums, has put out an EP, two compilations, and one solo album, 2016’s She Is. “I didn’t dream of becoming an idol or a pop singer – I just had this vague idea that I wanted to continue my band and pursue music,” Jonghyun told Dazed in 2015. “I think the moment I listened to my own recording is the moment I became much more sincere... to record something at SM and hear it with my own ears was just so appealing.” Samaritans can be contacted on 116 123 (UK) and 116 123 (ROI).
