Music / NewsNirvana confirm that Kurt Cobain is dead, not on Peruvian TVThe band deny a new conspiracy theory suggesting that their frontman faked his own death, fled to Peru and became a talent show performerShareLink copied ✔️September 13, 2016MusicNewsTextSelim Bulut Nirvana have taken to their official Facebook page to confirm some sad news: that Kurt Cobain is still dead, and not performing on a Peruvian talent show. A conspiracy theory recently floated on social media and popularised after appearing on the Daily Mail (where else) suggested that Cobain, who died over 20 years ago, had in fact faked his own death and fled to Peru, where he adopted the name Ramiro Saavedra. The theory emerged after footage of Saavedra performing Nirvana’s “Come As You Are” in 2012 went viral. The footage was from Yo Soy, a Peruvian talent show that appears to be modelled on Stars In Their Eyes. Despite the fact that Saavedra looks absolutely nothing like Cobain (plastic surgery) and plays with his right hand rather than Cobain’s left (a clever ruse), the theory went wild given how much he sounds the part. Seriously, check out a video of the performance below. It’s uncanny. The surviving members of Nirvana, in good humour, commented on the claims on Facebook. “It is true, Kurt is alive,” they wrote, “He needed time to learn to play the guitar with his right hand. Finding left-handed guitars is not easy. We are so happy to have him back and forgive him for all of the sadness that we have held so deeply in our hearts.” Dive deeper into the strange world of music conspiracies, and check out Nirvana’s response below.
