Chaired by Queen Latifah, the trio will also be joined by actress Sophia Bush and songwriter Diane Warren. With the announcement made in a last minute statement by the music festival just one day ahead of Michelle Obama’s Keynote, the festival say the event will see, “this powerhouse group of women bring their collective years of experience to the table for a dialogue on finding one’s passion, music, and the importance of girls’ education everywhere.” The First Lady will be directly highlighting the Let Girls Learn initiative, which aims to address and break down barriers for the 62 million girls around the world without an education. With half of that number being teenagers, Let Girls Learn stresses the benefits that come with ensuring young girls are in school and educated. We’ve already highlighted the criminally underrated feminist legacy of Missy Elliott, but this feminist discussion (and the inclusion of Michelle Obama at SXSW) demonstrates the widespread infiltration political ideas into pop culture platforms such as music festivals. However this year's proceedings haven’t been without controversy, with Alice Glass successfully calling for SXSW to remove Crystal Castles from a feminist party hosted by tumblr. Michelle Obama’s Keynote presentation follows on from President Obama’s appearance at the festival on March 11th.
