With the likes of De La Soul, Ghostpoet, Eglo's Funkineven, Teebs, Plaid, Kwes, Submotion Orchestra, Kidkanevil, and Kutmah all set for the Croatian coast, Soundwave Festival will be throwing one of the biggest parties from 19-23 July in Tisno. Showcasing the finest Electronica, Hip Hop, Funk & Soul acts, this year will see the likes of label Eglo's Alexander Nut, Fatima & Olivier DaySoul perform, as well as night/label Hoya Hoya featuring Jonny Dub, Strategy, Jon K and head honcho Illum Sphere - who we speak to about their release policy and future direction alongside an exclusive mix for us featuring Burial, Untold, & Gucci Mane...
We don't try and emulate what others are doing, and just try to create something based on how we'd want a night to be. The same goes for the label, we're not bothered with releasing music based on current trends, we're bothered about releasing music we think is genuinely amazing and that will sound as good in five, ten or 15 years time
Dazed Digital: How would you describe the Hoya Hoya style/ethic?
Illum Sphere: The ethic for the night and label is pretty similar. We don't try and emulate what others are doing, and just try to create something based on how we'd want a night to be. The same goes for the label, we're not bothered with releasing music based on current trends, we're bothered about releasing music we think is genuinely amazing and that will sound as good in five, ten or 15 years time. The label is style young, and only three releases deep, but we're lining up full releases from artists now for the next year or so.
DD: What links the artists on the label so far?
Illum Sphere: There's a small rule we have that only artists who have played the night can release on the label. So far we've had myself, Lone and Krystal Klear (all residents of the club) as well as Lorn, Eliphino, Ras G, Om Unit, Ikonika and Monky.
DD: How have your own productions fit into this?
Illum Sphere: I had a track on 001, along with Lone and Krystal Klear. Out of the residents we were the ones producing (at the time) so it felt right for us to be on the first release. However, all the Hoya residents (Eclair Fifi, Chunky, Jon K and Jonny Dub) are now making music, so it's definite a goal to release something by all of them.
DD: What's the story behind the name?
Illum Sphere: Pure fluke really. It was the result of typing something into a (probably inaccurate) Japanese translator online. However, I love names that become synonymous with something, yet literally relate in no way at all. Hoya:Hoya instantly stood out from the other ideas we had for that very reason and we get asked about the name a lot, which I like.
DD: What can we expect from the label in the next six months?
Illum Sphere: The label is style young, and only three releases deep, but we're lining up full releases from artists now for the next year or so. There's a digi bundle of HOYA001,002 and 003 out at the end of April. This is to put the first three split 12"s behind us and move on to full individual releases. HOYA004 will be a concept EP from Blue Daisy, and we're just finalising 005, 006 and 007 at the moment.
