The young house & garage-influenced producer set to land on Southern Fried makes us an exclusive mix featuring Maya Jane Coles, Julio Bashmore and Claude VonStroke
Entitled 'House Culture', the new five-track EP from 22-year-old electronic producer Kashii is a mix of his influences taken from across the ever-varying genres of house, garage and UK bass, culminating in a throwback sound laden with 808 cowbells and old school vocal samples. Kashii, aka Garry West who made his debut in 2010 with “Tru Da City”, has now taken on a new direction with a number of upcoming producers and vocalists... here he makes us an exclusive mix ahead of the release due out on the iconic Southern Fried label.
I wanted a name that was short and catchy, so I spent days on the internet looking at pages of random words, I came across Kashii which is an anime character apparently, I looked it up and its also a famous Japanese actress' surname
...your secret talent?
I like to think I'm a pretty good cook!
...your worst vice?
Haha, there's too many to think of! Probably sleeping far too much, I love it... but it often leaves me with little time to get things done.
...the story behind your name?
I was originally producing with another guy under the name France... but we decided to do our own thing so when I signed to Southern Fried we decided it was best to come up with a new alias. I wanted something short and catchy, so I spent days on the internet looking at pages of random words, I came across Kashii which is an anime character apparently, I looked it up and its also a famous Japanese actress' surname.
...your favourite sound?
...your worst fashion secret?
I love wearing slippers in the studio
...your favourite website?
Other than social networks, I spend a lot of my time looking on rightmove at multi-million pound properties... One day maybe!
...your favourite label?
Swamp 81 as of recent, they are putting out some dope records... only thing that gets me is how long they take to release!
...at the top of your hit/shit list?
HIT - Disclosure - Tenderly
SHIT - anything by LMFAO, them lot are everything I despise about dance music
...are you listening to now?
Maya Jane Coles - Hummingbird
How would you describe your work?
Eclectic dance music. People always want a specified genre from you, but I think one of the worst things you can do as an artist is to pigeon hole yourself because once you're well known for a certain genre of music its hard to escape it. Let other people call it what they want.
What are you most excited about next?
I've got a lot of bits going on right now, but I want to get busy playing out. I've spent the last year focusing on writing so I want to put my energy into DJing now.
