There’s a refreshing pace to S.C.U.M. Slow burning yet relentless, the band has let excitement steadily rise around them, while remaining impervious to any outside pressure and electing to take everything at their own pace. This track, the first material the band has released since last year’s download series, SIGNALS, will feature on Mute’s Record Store Day release, ‘Vorwarts’ – alongside unreleased material from Grinderman, Can and Liars. Not bad company to keep to keep for a band who are yet to post their debut. We caught up with front man Tom Cohen to find out more.

Dazed Digital: How did you guys meet?
Tom Cohen: We were young and were just drawn to each other as we had similar outlooks and music tastes.

DD: Describe your sound?
Tom Cohen: Vast!

DD: The S.C.U.M acronym? What does it stand for?
Tom Cohen: Society for Cutting Up Men (S.C.U.M manifesto was published by Valerie Solanas in 1968, she was an American radical feminist writer, best known for her attempted murder of Andy Warhol. She wrote the SCUM Manifesto which encouraged male gendercide and the creation of an all-female society)

DD: What kind of material do you approach in your writing?
Tom Cohen: Fur, velvet and suede.

DD: Can you explain the video concept for 'Summon The Sound'?
Tom Cohen: It's footage we discovered from a show we played in Warsaw a few years ago. We were interested in the motion of time, light and colour.

DD: What’s next for you guys?
Tom Cohen: Out on tour with The Kills, our first single on Mute called 'Amber Hands' is released in May followed by our debut album in the summer. More touring and lots of UK & European festivals.
