From Wednesday the Dazed gallery hosts Too Black For BET, the debut London solo exhibition by Jayson Scott Musson of the Philadelphia hip hop trio Plastic Little. Here, the dark observations and hilarious wordplay of songs like "Crambodia' are translated into subversive poster art. "The themes deal with race, politics, war, Star Wars, sex, oral sex, art and life itself... I think?" he says.
Back in Philly, Jayson is part of the prolific Space 1026 art collective/gallery/studio, whose in-your-face aesthetic combines print-making, drawing, sculpture, design and video. "Space 1026 is like a second home. Places like 1026 are important to Philly and any city because it illustrates that if you really want to start something, with the strength of you and your friends, you can actually do it," explains Jayson, of the die hard DIY spirit. "Just to see all of the history and love, the intertwining relationships, it's simply just fucking awesome and seriously makes me want to cry. The Space gave a home to the aesthetic of my generation. Is that too cliche?"
Following this exhibition and its accompanying book, published by Free News, Jayson plans Too Black For BET: ANZ. "The ANZ will be revealed closer to show time, but as of right now, I'm just promising some fucked up shit. Like a circus that you're imprisoned in and a clown just choose you to be his jail bitch. You gotta suck off his red nose to keep him from putting a shiv in your belly."
Too Black For BET is at the Dazed Gallery, 112-116 Old Street, London, from Wednesday 21st November.
