Taking over the Freemasons hall in central London as part of Vauxhall Fashion Scout, the Chinese-born designer showed a focused and complete Spring Summer collection. Based around white, Ma used doses of silver, gold and mint green as accent colours. The majority of ‘colour’ pieces came as bottoms; skirts and trousers were plain but glamorous, while Ma’s jackets and tops oozed of intricate craftsmanship. Layered and flowing, the jackets were often draped and boasted asymmetric details. An abstract print and chunky jewellery added to a sense of sophisticated yet edgy feeling for next year’s Spring Summer season. Dazed Digital: What was the name and theme of the collection? Masha Ma: It’s called Icebreaker because the white and silver colours are icy, but still summery in a minimalistic way. DD: But there’s another meaning to the name as well… Masha Ma: Yeah, it’s an introductory show for me as well, I’m breaking the ice and showing my debut collection in London… DD: What inspired you? Masha Ma: The main inspiration was a really old industrial building in New York’s Meatpacking district. It’s all white and super sharp, a bit retro futuristic. DD: What was the fabric in the first silver skirt we saw? Masha Ma: It was actually a silver foil on top of canvas, which was very similar to the building I saw in New York. DD: Tell me about the abstract print… Masha Ma: We wanted to use the print as a piece of fabric, rather doing it as a story, so we used it for texture… DD: What’s your favourite piece in the collection? Masha Ma: Oh God, what was easiest to make? A T-shirt maybe! No, I love everything in the show… Photography by Christopher Dadey Escape the algorithm!
