Staged in the astonishing brand new Topshop space on top of the Old Eurostar Terminal at Waterloo, and aided by a glam rock soundtrack that culminated with Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Edge of Seventeen’, out came a procession of some of today’s top models (Dree Hemingway, Coco Rocha and Lyndsey Wixson) hair teased out to the max (which hairstylist, Paul Hanlon described as “Saturday Night disco hair”) and balanced on clear Perspex heels that will surely be a hit come next summer. Diaphanous was key to the collection from the billowing flared trousers and capes to the layers of printed chiffon and more ethereal tulle overlays. To the already potent mix, add sequinned bodysuits, micro shorts, kaftans, metallic trouser suits that screamed pure Halston, shredded knits, sunburst prints, macramé, fringing and laser cutting; it all shows just how ahead of the High Street pack the Topshop Unique team really are. If there was a whiff of Louis Vuitton’s afro-ed glamazons of S/S 10, chalk it down to stylist extraordinaire, Katie Grand, who works on both shows. But it’s interesting to see how the design team translate these decidedly luxe propositions into something ready for the high street. Next season the Topshop Unique girl turns showgirl.
