Loewe are convinced their new ‘Leather Icons’ collection will look good on anyone. Naturally we’d love to find an exception to the rule, but there’s not a fluorescent biker jacket or gold trench to be seen, just a damn fine range of classic pieces including tailored blazers, shift dresses and skinny trousers for women and three types of sports jacket for men. And they’re all in black. 'It felt natural to use the essential colour of leather,' explains Creative Director Stuart Vevers. 'It also helped to make a focused, bold statement. I always think black makes leather tougher and sexier.' Take their word for it, they will look good on anyone. Except maybe not all at the same time. That would be hell… for leather.

Dazed Digital: How have the classic leather pieces been made relevant for today?
Stuart Vevers: The cut, proportions and constructions, raw cut edges and unlined suedes and shearlings, tougher details like the zips and maculine buckle details. It's about a contrast the tailoring is sharp and lean, the biker jacket is super soft and louche. We've also incorporated silhouettes that are less expected in leather, such as the parka or one of my favourites, the unlined, super soft, shearling 'hoodie'.

DD: Why are the pieces all made in black?
Stuart Vevers: For the launch of the collection of leather essentials we it felt natural to use the essential colour of leather, black.  It also helped to make a focused, bold statement. I always think black makes leather tougher and sexier.

DD: Who will the collection appeal to?
Stuart Vevers: The idea behind the collection was to create the building blocks of a leather wardrobe and to introduce the heritage skills of the house to a new generation. Something with a strong Loewe point of view but not a seasonal collection. Since I arrived at Loewe two years ago I wanted to focus on what makes the house different, its dna, made relevant for now. The leather at Loewe has always been what its been most famous for, I wanted to focus on this. One of the goals of this collection is that the pieces could suit different ages, shapes and tastes. This collections isn't about a total look, but pieces that work with your own character. This message was really where the idea of the casting, for the images that launch the collection, we shot on very different characters who had their own personal style, we often mixed Loewe pieces with what they were wearing when they arrived at the shoot. It felt more natural and spontaneous.
