Beginning in Kentucky, Rag & Bone have long been working craftsmen who taught them the importance of quality, craftsmanship and attention to detail early on. The lifestyle brand who offers men’s, women’s, footwear and accessories collections, are available at high end boutiques and exclusive department stores worldwide, with two flagship stores in New York and are set to open a pop-up store at London's Bluebird on the King's Road. We speak to the designers upon the launch of the new store...
Dazed Digital: Who or what was the inspiration for your A/W 2010/11 collection?
Rag & Bone: A/W was all about british explorers in the early part of the 20th century. English men heading off around the world, exploring anything they could. Specifically I was interested in George Mallory and his attempt to climb Everest in 1924, dressed in a tweed suit. That idea of mountaineering in tweed and the idea of mixing technical fabrics in traditional silhouettes with traditional fabrics in technical modern silhouettes has always been key in our collections. The idea of layering all types of fabrics and textures resonated with the theme of traditional himalayan/tibetan and Northern Indian dressing.
DD: What has been the best moment for your label so far?
Rag & Bone: Probably being one of the 2006 CFDA/Vogue fashion fund finalists. Or opening our first shop.
DD: Who do you design for?
Rag & Bone: Myself for mens... and for womens the downtown New York girl.
DD: How does Rag & Bone keep its designs standing out from other denim or casual lifestyle brands?
Rag & Bone: Firstly we do not see ourselves as a denim brand. We focus on the quality of what we make first of all. We use the finest fabrics, the finest buttons, zips lining everything. We make clothes properly, mostly in America in old factories that can remember how clothes used to be made. We do not do disposable fashion, we make clothes that we hope people will treasure. I think that separates us from a lot of our contemporaries.
DD: What is your favourite piece of clothing that you own?
Rag & Bone: Probably one of my handmade Rag & Bone suits. Or the jeans I've worn pretty much every day for the last nine months... I'm sort of married to them.
