Damir Doma has recently looked to his past to curate an archive for Oki-Ni and now he forges ahead into the future with a basics line, SILENT that is launching for S/S 10. A diffusion line for Doma seems almost natural given that he is setting out to create a separate identity for SILENT so that it compliments his mainline as well as standing out on its own with a softened up approach to the pieces. With SILENT, he has also dipped his toes into womenswear, giving us a taster of what we can expect should he design his mainline for women as well.

Dazed Digital: Why did you decide to launch this SILENT line?

Damir Doma: I felt there was a need for something more accessible to compliment my mainline and offer basics with a fashion edge. The philosophy behind it being that it is both more accessible in price and style but at the same time something very effortless. The purpose and almost the ‘keywords’ of the design process  was to create something pure, puristic and raw - something as pure to its original design and an open, honest use of the materials we decided to create the product with.

DD: Do you find that women are into wearing Damir Doma's mainline hence why SILENT comprises both womenswear and menswear?
Damir Doma: No, not as such. In general it was always my goal to have womenswear in my main line as well – I’ve just started to work on my women’s line for Damir Doma – but I wanted to have both men’s and women’s from the launch with SILENT. The design philosophies are different for both brands. They can be compared but only to a certain level and not too much. We want SILENT to have its own identity. The pieces themselves are much more puristic and simple in the way they have been constructed, it’s very much about the product. Each piece has to work on its own, when held away from the collection.
