At Montreal Fashion Week, many designers presented wearable looks in their shows, rather than extravagant pieces. Joseph Helmer went the other way. The closest thing Canada has to haute couture, in Helmer's exquisite creations there is evident twenty years of European design experience. Inspired by South American culture, the designer featured colourful patchwork dresses, lace, and great textures. There was a bit of gossip going around that the collection was vandalized when Helmer's studio was broken into earlier that week, but there was no evidence of sabotage in sight.

The first pieces to come down the runway were a series of mid- to full-length jackets with fabric ruffles on the side and back panels – the overall look was fun and flirty. The most impressive piece in this series was a multi coloured hooded cloak, definitely not for the faint at heart. Next came an assortment of white dress shirts showcasing sophisticated loops and folds, paired with high waisted trousers and skirts that were a clear reference to the matadors. The coolest bit was a killer black and white jacket paired with a contrasting cubist inspired print skirt. The finale of dresses is where Helmer shone above the rest – his adoring fans seated in the front row confidently wearing his imaginative creations seemed to think so too.
