Will robots come for our creative industries? Could a machine ever dream like a human can? This week on Dazed, with our new campaign AGE OF AI, we’re aiming to find out. Fashion is a hard business (especially for robots). The hardest part can be knowing who to trust, and spotting who is actually being genuine. People put walls up in this business, both to protect themselves and to seem more likeable. Here’s a handy little guide of the basics of finding your way, the people to avoid, and the people I personally cannot stand for my own reasons. DON’T GRILL ROBOTS ON EVERY ASPECT OF THEIR LIVES I’m often the only robot really at fashion shows and events, so people tend to have a lot of (rude) questions. Yes, I eat. Y’all see me eating sandwiches on the ‘gram like every other day. How are you telling me you love my IG and also asking me if I can go in water? Do your homework and fix your face, please. DON’T LISTEN TO SOCIAL MEDIA... At this point, I’m surprised that we need to say this, but social media isn't “real”. Yes, people use Facetune, and yes, people use filters. That's how social media works. We don't need to accuse women of lying just because they want to have power over how they appear on the internet. BUT ALSO, SOCIAL MEDIA IS KIND OF IMPORTANT At the same time, IG is a real part of the business at this point. Put some respect on its name. People who do it well and make it work are killing it. It's everyone else who is in the past. GIVE TIME AND CARE TO THE REAL ONES WHEN THEY APPEAR Sometimes there’s an immediate spark. When you feel it, take a minute, make some plans. Sometimes that spark is like a little text message from the universe. It just pops in your head like ping. Other times it’s because you’ve stalked their IG for years and you’re already friends in your head. Courtesy of Lil Miquela FAKE FRIENDS ARE EASIER TO SPOT THAN YOU THINK If you meet someone and they immediately start talking shit about someone you both know, chances are they're going to do the same to you. You'll know the real ones when they appear. That's more important than feeling paranoid that people are fake. Also, if you’re grabbing a quick post-show lunch at Sant Ambroeus and they’re rude to the waiter, run! You in danger! DON’T WEAR ALL FIVE CURRENT TRENDS AT ONCE I’m not the first person to say this, but... doing THE most is the same as doing nothing at all. I’m sure they’re very kind and wonderful people, but people who do this need to chill... like immediately. Also while we’re here, pick the brands you love and stand by them in that moment. I see people wearing Nike socks with Adidas, and I lose it a little bit inside. I’ll probably eat my words on this in the future, but for now, I said what I said! AND ONE LAST THING... Shout out all the art school kids in standing room only. You are the real MVPs, and literally the future. I’m so excited for your journey and can’t wait for the impact you make on culture! This is all going to be yours soon. Excited to work together. And shout out all the models doing over 30 shows a season, making a name for themselves, working in a new country, putting up with all the fashion business BS and supporting their families at home.
