Bringing together a collective of 14 female Nike designers, they’ve created a collection of ten sneakers that put a twist on two of Nike’s biggest icons – the Air Force 1 and the Air Jordan 1. Each of the 14 women who were part of the design process were chosen for their diverse skill sets and backgrounds, and what they would be bringing to the collective. The challenge was unique; to reimagine two iconic silhouettes and design ten sneakers in just five days. In the words of Nike’s materials design director Marie Crow: “That was one of the biggest tasks for us, to design ten shoes in a very short amount of time, 14 people who had never worked together before.” Nike x The National Fashion&Business Saturday ClubModel Nike athlete Shona Richards Each silhouette has been reimagined five times to fit five character archetypes that embody the modern woman: the Explorer, the Sage, the Lover, the Rebel and the Jester. From there, the collective had to decide how they were going to create shoes to fit each archetype and create the story to go along with them. As part of a week-long project dedicated to giving young Londoners the chance to see inside often opaque industries, Nike teamed up with Dazed and the National Business&Fashion Saturday Club (in partnership with the British Fashion Council) to put on a workshop day for young Londoners. Nike x The National Fashion&Business Saturday Club Participants on the day got to see the collection up close and personal, hear from Crow about the design process and her role at Nike, as well as four members of various fashion teams here at Dazed, and then in groups of three try their hand at styling a look that fit with the sneaker and archetype they were given. The model in the shoot, Nike athlete Shona Richards said: “It’s awesome to have so many young talents together, it’s powerful.” You can see the results of their efforts in the gallery above.
